Can I do this myself?

Yes you can, and many people do. It will only cost £5 to set up an account in Google and then you can build and manage your campaigns straight away. Bear in mind, though that it can take many hours to set up a comprehensive campaign, and at least several hours each month to monitor and adjust the adverts, keywords, and click cost, to ensure that they are working optimally for you. As a busy business owner, this is time that would possibly be better spent on other tasks.
If you want to outsource this task, choose a company that listens to your requirements, and makes their charging structure clear for you. Make sure that they regularly report back on what they have done, and what impact this is having on your visitor levels.

Hi Sur la, thanks for contributing here.
The success of any marketing campaign, whether Web-based or conventional marketing, depends on the return achieved. This return is usually measured in financial terms, but could equally be applied to some other objective set by the business, such as newsletter requests, requests for more information etc.

How successful is your adwords campaign when measured against your other marketing channels, and what expectations did you have?

A 2% CTR can be very successful in certain cases - if you have a high level of impressions and/or a good conversion rate, for example. To illustrate this, the holiday accommodation campaign that I run has an overall CTR of just under 1% has delivered Sales in excess of 1200% of the click cost. Obviously, not all of that is profit, and will clearly be diluted if you pay somebody to do it for you, but I cannot think of a better way to have launched that business on the market.

On the other hand, a high CTR but low conversion rate can mean you are paying too much to Google for the business you are getting.

Out of interest, what keywords do you target and what does your typical ad text look like? I don't mind spending a few minutes looking at it if it helps.
